OUR BEAUTIFUL FOXES! There are at least 21 different species of fox (subfamily Vulpinae, in the dog family Canidae), around the globe. But, out of all these, the most adaptive, the most widely known, the most popular, is our RED Fox (Vulpes vulpes). This species has one of the largest distributions of any animal and can be found in the USA, Canada,UK, throughout Europe, Russia, Arctic Tundra (with Arctic foxes), Asia (including China and Japan), and even Australia (where they were introduced for hunting)!! ~ The Red Fox can be found in many different kinds of habitats: in forests, open countryside, moorlands, on beaches, in towns and cities (where they scavenge food scraps from people), and even in the Tundra (sub-arctic) conditions of northern Russia and Canada, where the beautiful Arctic Fox (Alopex lagopus) is also found! Usually, the fur coat of the Red Fox is made up of short hairs, (with the exception of the beautiful bushy tail), but in northern cold parts of the World, the Red Fox has a much longer fur coat! (written by David G. Hall, UK, 2002) |
